Our School Values

Education is a methodical effort towards learning basic facts about humanity. The core idea behind value education is to cultivate essential values in the students so that the civilization that teaches us to manage complexities can be sustained and further developed. It begins at home and it is continued in schools. Everyone accepts certain things in his/her life through various mediums like society or government.

Value education is important to help everyone in improving the value system that he/she holds and put them to use. Once, we understand our values in life, we can examine and control the various choices we make in our lives. It's our duty to uphold the various types of values in life such as cultural values, universal values, personal values and social values.

Thus value education is always essential to shape a student's life and to give him an opportunity of performing himself on the global stage. The need for value education among the parents, children, teachers is constantly increasing as we continue to witness increasing violent activities, behavioral disorder and lack of unity in society. (Kerala Education, 2011)

We have 8 Core Values at Oatley West Public School which we encourage our students, teachers and parents/carers to live by.

Values Certificates

Students may receive a Value Leaf Sticker for displaying the core values. These stickers are tracked by the student using a Values tree chart. If a child receives 8 Value stickers, they will receive a Bronze Value Certificate. Students attain Bronze, Silver and Gold Certificates leading to a Principal Award. Students are responsible for keeping their certificates and presenting them to their class teacher at each level of attainment. Certificates carry over from year to year therefore it is important awards are kept securely.

• Develop care and respect for themselves and others
• Take pride in their work
• Exhibit a strong sense of fairness and social justice
• Have respect for and understanding of Australia's history including the cultures and experiences of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people
• Have an appreciation of Australia's history and multicultural society
• Actively participate as citizens.

All students are expected to :

• Attend school every day, unless they are legally excused

• Be in class on time and prepared to learn

• Maintain a neat appearance and follow the school uniform policy

• Behave safely, considerately and responsibly including when travelling to and from school

• Follow class rules, speak courteously and cooperate with instructions and learning activities

• Treat staff, other students and members of the school community with dignity and respect

• Care for property belonging to themselves, the school and others.
